Taking influence from the world of Manga, adidas are set to release the COPA UltraBoost “Kakashi” as part of the upcoming Naruto collaboration. Featuring classic suede upper with deep cut wavy lines that are synonymous with the COPA, it’s a sneaker that looks like a COPA on the upper, but is actually an Ultraboost and we kinda like it. The trainer has its route in the world of Anime, which is the Japanese term for animation.
For those that aren’t familiar, Naruto is a hugely popular Manga series that was adapted into an anime series over a decade ago. It focuses on the eponymous young ninja as he attempts to seek recognition from his peers while also dreaming of becoming the Hokage, the leader of his village.
Continuing to honour the members of Team 7, the shoe is centred around a blue colour palette and motifs associated with the former Hokage of the Leaf Village.
The upper of the shoe is constructed of a faded blue suede drawn from the sleeves of Jōnin uniforms accented by the wave embroidery of the COPA. There are touches of grey on the Three Stripes branding, laces, tongue tab and heel tab which are by all accounts inspired by the signature grey hair of Kakashi of the Sharingan. You know you’ve made it when adidas are being inspired by your hair, bravo Kakashi.
Additional detailing comes in the form of a Leaf Village forehead protector lace tab, a Mangekyou Sharingan motifs on the tongue and Anbu crest at the rear referencing Kakashi’s time with the covert squad. Finally, a full-length BOOST midsole marked with “Hatake Kakashi” in Hiragana paired with a blue Continental rubber outsole round up the design of the shoe.
We are not going to profess to being an expert on Anime, but adidas have created a great pair of trainers here. A collab with a TV show can be dangerous territory in terms of design, and we have seen so many of these types of collabs come and go only to be consigned to the Clearance section within a month. All the more credit to adidas. Out now.
